Daewoo Liverpool
Looking to buy a Daewoo? Find out what's good, what's bad and what to watch out for from Honest John.
Nothing new in the name Nubira. The previous version was a fairly anonymous four-door saloon and estate car that marked the beginning of the end of Daewoo regurgitating old Chevrolets with names like Espero and Nexia in Liverpool.
Good: Very cheap now and loaded with kit.
Bad: Poor build quality, heavy tyre wear and electrical problems. Drives badly, even by late 1990s standards.

Good: Good value second-hand. Smooth engines and packed full of kit.
Bad: Uninspiring to look at and a bland car to drive. Engine oil can sludge, leading to starvation at main bearings.

Good: Cheap second-hand buy. Plenty of equipment.
Bad: Doesn't drive that well. Rattly trim, heavy on fuel and not that much room in the back or the boot.

Good: Very cheap transport for those unconcerned by image.
Bad: May prove uneconomic to repair if it fails the MoT.

£6,995 gets you into a Daewoo Kalos. With power steering. With five doors. With five three-point seatbelts. With ABS. With alloy wheels. With a remote alarm. And with a 1.4 engine.
Good: Cheap second-hand. Decent ride comfort.
Bad: Sloppy handling. Cheap, ill-fitting cabin plastics.

Slightly bigger than a Polo and slightly smaller than a Focus, Lacettis start with a 1.4 rise through a better equipped 1.6 or 1.6 automatic, and culminates with a sporty 1.8 in summer 2004. Engines are familiar GM Family 1 and Family II, as in some of the Vauxhall range.
Good: Presentable looks, roomy and grips well. Decent amount of kit for the cash.
Bad: Lacks any kind of flair in the way it drives.

Good: Roomy cabin and decent specification.
Bad: Very short life. Became the Chevrolet Nubira in the UK, and remained the Chevrolet Optra in other markets.

Good: Versatile, spacious mini-MPV with plenty of kit, respectable handling and a decent ride.
Bad: Load floor of the boot is quite high. Unforgivably hideous.
