Honda hasn't yet managed to perfectly match its 5-speed auto to the much narrower and stronger torque band of its new 150PS 2.2 I-DTEC diesel engine. Prototypes are running, though, and once Honda is happy with the CO2, economy and drivability, we'll see this combination in the UK.
The 2.0 litre gets a 5-speed manual box, or 5-speed Tiptronic style automatic, confusingly forward for upchanges and back for downchanges and opposite to the way Mazda went. But this is a very pleasant, smooth and viceless engine, with no boomy periods, as happy at 50 or 80 as it is at 100mph plus.

The Civic immediately leaps to class leader because it makes everything else look conservative (especially the Golf and the Focus), and because it has even better-than-Jazz seat-folding, load-carrying versatility. As far as the Swindon-built three and five door Civics are concerned, it’s been there, done that, got the T-shirt. You’ll find tests of them all elsewhere on this website: 1.4 and 1.6 five-doors; 1.4, 1.6 and rip snorting 2.0 Type R three-doors are all covered.
The new one, now called Honda Civic Hybrid, has the striking 4-door body of the latest South East Asian and American Civic 4-door (the only way you can get that body in the UK). Plus a Jazz 1,339cc engine modified with self closing valves.
Good: Fuel economy and Congestion Tax exemption.
Bad: Strangely doesn't look as good as the same body with standard petrol engines as seen in SE Asia and the USA. Rolls a lot on corners.

The old Civic Type-R had close to cult status. 35,000 were sold worldwide. And punters are passionate. You could make disparaging remarks about a chap's nearest and dearest, but criticise his Type-R and he’d eat your liver with a nice Chianti.

The RAV-4 started the UK Sports Utility Vehicle thing back in June 1994. Then sprouted an extra pair of doors making it even more practical in June 1995. Mine started off averaging 43mpg, no less, both on the computer and brim to brim over three fills of Total, because my local Shell station didn’t have V-Power diesel. Then it dropped back a couple of mpg. V-Power didn’t make any difference.
It offers the slightly raised driving position many women feel more confident with and which is also very friendly to bad backs. It’s as practical and as capacious as most MPVs available in the market in Coventry.
Honda CR-V 2002 has a new engine, basically the same 2.0 litre VTEC unit used in the Stream and the Civic Type R, but in this case tuned for torque rather than out-and-out power.
