Jeep Newcastle
Looking to buy a Jeep? Find out what's good, what's bad and what to watch out for from Honest John.
Despite at least 65 4x4 SUVs on the UK market, if you want a real off-roader for around £25k, and you need to do certain things, you could find yourself stuck in the mud. Say, for instance, you have to tow a big twin-axle caravan, or a double horsebox, or a biggish boat, or a sizeable livestock trailer, or a hamburger stand, then you're caught between a stone and a boulder.
Good: Impressive off-road and towing credentials. Plenty of kit for your money. Became very cheap in 2008.
Bad: Cabin space is limited for a 4x4 of this size. Problems with reliability. Thirsty. High VED.

Bad: Acceptable, but not great on the road. Slurry autobox. Noisy engine. Auto 242g/km CO2.

It’s a seven seater in the manner of the Nissan Pathfinder and the latest Hyundai Santa Fe, but it can’t take the same seven rugby players as a Land Rover Discovery 3. Legroom at the back of the Limited is limited because, like the Pathfinder, there’s no toe room under the centre seats.
Good: Seven seats, good diesel engine, excellent off-road, decent on road, retro looks.
Bad: Rearmost 6th and 7th seats are cramped.

Good: Most fuel-efficient, road-biased Jeep yet. Softer looks than other Jeeps might not upset environmentalists.
Bad: Seems a bit out in the cold because Jeep Patriot does the job better.

Good: High specification. Better road manners than the previous model. Excellent Mercedes V6 diesel. High towing capacity. Cheap to buy used.
Bad: Still lags behind the best on the road. Zero stars for pedestrian impact safety. High VED so huge depreciation from new.

Cobbs It’s hard to find a real bargain on the forecourt these days, but this one is going to make a lot of customers – and dealers – very happy. The Patriot is a 4x4 with almost the same dimensions as the Ford C-Max but more off-road ability than all the far-eastern SUVs put together.
Good: Excellent value for money. Plenty of kit. Decent drive on the road and very capable off it.
Bad: 4x4 looks might attract unwanted attention.

Good: Big improvement on the previous model. Still looks the part. Diesel now available.
Bad: Fuel consumption of petrol engines still on the high side.

Good: Long wheelbase Wrangler just as brilliant off road. J8 Military Spec more promising. Manuals best to drive.
Bad: Automatic box is fairly horrible. Trim crude and old fashioned.
