Rover Metro (1990 - 1995) Wolverhampton

Good: Surprisingly comfortable over long distances. Reasonable fun to drive. Fairly reliable, cheap transport.
Bad: Heavy steering. Petrol versions prone to head gasket failure. Diesels slow and not that economical. Rusts badly.

Rover 800 (1986 - 1999) Wolverhampton

Good: Big, roomy, well equipped and cheap. A good motorway cruiser, especially in refined 2.7 V6 guise.
Bad: Showing their age these days. Rusts. Expect components to wear out, especially suspension. Avoid the 2.5 KV6 version.

Good: Cheap. Handles quite well. Still popular as a first car for young drivers.
Bad: Feels outdated. Rusts. 'K' Series engines are prone to blowing their head gaskets.

Good: Smart styling. The Vi is quick and economical, the 1.6 CVT responsive. Feels compact in town yet comfortable on the motorway.
Bad: Patchy build quality. Head gaskets can fail on 'K' Series engines. Overly light steering.

Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) Wolverhampton

Good: Available for banger money. The 1.6 Honda engine is sweet and refined.
Bad: Over the hill now. The diesels are noisy and unrefined. Head gasket failure on 'K' Series engines.

Good: They change hands for pocket money these days. Honda's 1342cc engine is best of the bunch.
Bad: Outdated in the way they look, feel and drive.

Good: Better-looking Rover 200 with keener steering and sportier suspension. Good value these days.
Bad: Electrical niggles. 'K' Series engines can blow their head gaskets. Looks and feels its age inside.

Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) Wolverhampton

Good: Rover's version of the Honda Civic. Quite well equipped and a reasonable drive in its day.
Bad: Head gasket failure on 'K' Series engines. Front suspension bushes wear. Parts, especially some trim, are hard to get.

Good: Very light on the fuel. Reasonable amount of kit. Tidy looks. The later ones make the better buys.
Bad: Felt old and outclassed, even when new. Not that roomy. 'K' Series engines can blow their head gaskets.

Good: Smart-looking car best in 2.3 guise. The most reliable Rover of its era.
