She bought it from my mum four years ago when my mum gave up driving. With the exception of having a stone through the air conditioning compressor, nothing has gone wrong with it, it’s had routine servicing and maintenance and needed nothing else. We will replace the tyres this year as they will be 8 years old (car is 2016 model, and is very low mileage for the year). It easily does well over 50mpg, closer to 60 on a run and is comfortable. The Apple Car Play connection works well, so no need to update the maps on the cars SD card. Criticism? The boot is quite small for the size of car, but that does translate into good space for passengers. It’s not a car I would buy, but my daughter loves it and having just asked her, would highly recommend one! With Octopus I think it is mainly the Ohme ones.’ It’s only Intelligent Octopus Go (a tariff that watches wholesale electricity prices every 30 minutes) that requires a compatible charger. The regular Octopus Go tariff will work with any charger, as will every other supplier’s tariff. I know folks that use a 3 pin plug to run their EV, but they’re low mileage users - at c2.2kW output, it’ll take 24 hours to fully charge a 40kW/h battery. Be aware that LEAF does use a charging socket that isn’t now the most common (putting it mildly) on public chargers, so any search for amps will have to be filtered to look for Chademo connections. You will find them in the wild at existing sites, but I don’t see many being installed now. I asked him about £20 petrol charge….   Me: I’m not paying £20 petrol charge. Sales: Oh every car comes with empty tank so we have to charge customer £20 and we fill some petrol in…. Me: Don’t bother.  There’s Shell 500m down the road from here. Sales: I don’t think you can’t get there…. Me: I can bring jelly can with me then… Sales: You can’t bring in petrol in our premise for Health & Safety Reason. Me: That’s fine.  I’ll do it outside in the street. Sales:…..   It’s the same story when I went to see Honda Jazz…..I clearly told him I’m only interested in 1.3 Petrol, Manual and Silver/Grey post 18/68 reg, and less than £12k.  Every day he called me if I’m interested in Red car or Automatic etc….   I just don’t know how to deal with these people…If the salesperson is playing the fool or genuinely fool.  Should I play the game ? (John F) hjforum1487082 Fri, 17 May 2024 11:30:55 +0000 I'm not going to bore everyone with every detail of my 35+ years in the motor industry - but in brief...  Double First in Physics, MSc in Advanced Engineering. PhD in ICE combustion & emissions (sponsored by Ford). Worked for Ford, Rover, Aston Martin, JLR, BMW, plus a few others. SAIC-GM PATAC in Shanghai and GM ATC Shanghai (where I am now). 178+ technical publications and two books published by SAE.  You did ask ;-) Thanks - that is indeed impressive. The PureTech is recognised throughout the industry as a design that looks great on paper but the realisation had been a disaster. Its not just the cambelt. Its oil consumption (piston ring design and poor materials), injector problems etc etc. Almost every component of the engine is sub-par. There were supposed to be manufacturing changes made in late 2020/early 21.  We'll see how they pan out. There are now millions of these award winning 1.2 puretech engines all over the globe in various Stellantis models  (30 Jan 2019 — PSA says 3.8 million PureTech engines have been produced to date) - are they really that bad?  I'm watching my own carefully run in engine's oil consumption which at a mere 25,000 miles is so far very low.  It was changed at the one-year-old 'first service' (allegedly) at  5500 miles and again by me at 10k and 20k miles, using correct spec oil and filters. The PureTech does drive well and its a nice engine when running properly. But with so many shortcomings why would you choose to buy one? Because I thought the 130hp was a well designed modern engine (with its reputation ruined by poor materials) coupled with an excellent gearbox (EAT6) resulting in an enjoyable sporty powertrain in a fun to drive good VFM small SUV.  (Fortunately Mrs F liked the car). .... Removing the oil filler cap will enable you to see the belt condition. Tools are available to check belt condition.... Indeed so.  I made one out of a sc*** piece of copper sheeting I had lying around. Dayco are the originator of the BIO drive used by Stellantis (licenced to Gates and Continental). Indeed so.  It's a shame they didn't make their belts fit for purpose for their BIO drive. Their incompetence must have cost Stellantis a fortune in recalls and repairs. Peugeot-supplied belt will be re-packaged Dayco.  They have gone through at least three revisions in the last few years.  Dayco-branded aftermarket belt kits are actually very reasonably priced.  Maybe - but with their reputation I wouldn't touch a Dayco belt with a bargepole.   I'd rather pay more money for a better quality belt if and when the one we have (whatever its make) looks as though it's deteriorating. The problems with wet belts and timing chains is that a lot of people stretch servicing intervals and the acid in the oils eat into them so if you are buying a second hand car make sure it has had the servicing and oil changes at the correct mileage. I was a foreman in a large Nissan dealer before I retired and saw Timing chain problems on vehicles that had missed services but ones that had services at the right time where fine, if the car has 2 year servicing get the engine oil changed at a year Excellent advice.  I suspect many puretech failures were because as well as the early poor belt quality,  the engines got cheap non-spec oil from untrustworthy garages which didn't get changed often enough.  Possibly some didn't get their bunged up oil filters changed either resulting in the pick-up strainer getting blocked with resulting poor oil circulation.     Technical matters John F Technical matters http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198137 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198137&v=t&m=1487082 Advice on replacing my car in UK - sellers market? (edlithgow) hjforum1487067 Fri, 17 May 2024 07:13:35 +0000 For 3 decades now, I've used the lowest cold viscosity with the rated hot viscosity - that gets oil around the engine fastest when it's cold and warming up - which is when most engine wear occurs - I'm presently using 0W-30 in my 3.0 TDi VW which is rated for 5W-30 - but importantly I do ensure it meets the correct VW specification. My late lamented Skywing had very little carbon on the piston crowns and in the ring and oil control grooves, despite being ancient, and running a bit rich by the plug appearance. This could be due to sometimes using liquid water decoking in the running engine ( though I believe this may have caused spalling damage to the cylinder walls, and wouldnt do it again. I would use steam instead, which might have other Smokey Yunik stylee advantages) It could also be due to the use of relatively high viscosity oil with a relatively  high detergent/dispersant content, a relatively low viscosity index improver content, and a relatively low volatility.(I used a 1 to 1 mix of CPC SAE 40 and Mobil Delvac MX 15W40) Low viscosity oils tend to be more volatile, as per the NOAK volatility test, and such volatiles are more likely to be carried over entrained in blowby gases via the crankcase ventilation system and burnt. Low viscosity oils are probably also more likely to pass the piston rings and be burnt directly. Both tendencies will be aggravated by higher compression ratios and turbo-boosting. Discussed here, with a technical contribution by Sonofjoe, whos also been on here. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/how-common-are-stuck-rings.261924/page-2 He also suggests (I think plausibly but speculatively) that more stable synthetic oils might actually produce more combustion carbon deposits. The Skywing didn't use much oil. The Skywing's engine also got a lot cleaner generally (outside the combustion chamber) during the 10 years or so of my ownership. (as seen under the valve cover and in the sump) loosing the extensive varnish sheets it had when I bought it. This cant be due to steam cleaning or lower volatility (which would only affect the combustion chamber) and probably wasn't down to lower viscosity index improver content either. My guess would be that the relatively high solvency of the Group 1 SAE 40, combined with the dispersancy/detergency of the Delvac, shifted the varnish, while my mileage was too low for extensive oxidation of the inherently less stable non-synthetic oil. All a bit speculative, based on anecdotal evidence, as is yours. But I prefer my anecdote. No creative input from VW, for one thing.       Technical matters edlithgow Technical matters http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198108 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198108&v=t&m=1487067 Any - Recommend me an automatic family car (Doug87542) hjforum1487066 Fri, 17 May 2024 06:33:43 +0000 Hi all I'm looking for some recommendations on an automatic family car. Something roomy enough for a family of 4 (doesn't need to be massive) and that has a reasonable size boot (golf clubs!). Would like something reliable as I like to keep cars for around 5 years. I've previously had manuals but my wife will only drive automatic and whilst this will be my car, I'd like something she can drive when needed. My previous cars have been Honda CR-V and Mazda 6 both of which I loved but don't necessarily need something as large. I do around 12,000 miles a year, with regular dual carriageway and around town driving. Budget is £15K, and whilst I'm in North East Scotland, I'm happy to travel anywhere in UK. Haven't owned one so no actual experience, but Suzuki's are very reliable in general. The Baleno offers usefully more rear seat and boot space than the Swift, so if that is what you need or it appeals, go for it. They are light cars too, so the 1.0 Boostejet will offer strong performance as well as good economy.  As for the Sandero, I quite like the Stepway version but I'd still take a Baleno Boosterjet over one of them. As you are interested in extra space, another option you may want to consider is the Skoda Rapid and Seat Toledo. These are the same cars (barring badges and some minor trim differences) and are based on the Fabia/Ibiza/Polo platform. But they have a much longer wheelbase and a truly massive boot. Not sure if your budget would stretch to the later 1.0TSI, if so I'd certainly be looking at those. Otherwise, you'd be looking at the earlier 1.2TSI which came with either 85 or 105bhp. You just got the one body shape on the Toledo, but the Rapid also came as a sort of halfway estate called the Rapid Spaceback. Weirdly, it's boot is some way short of the Rapid/Toledo, but still nearly 100 litres more than the Baleno. The Spaceback is arguably a better looking car but horses for courses and all, plus, the extra boot space (550 litres!) of the Rapid/Toledo may swing it. (badbusdriver) hjforum1487064 Fri, 17 May 2024 06:01:24 +0000 Assuming the courtesy car was fully fuelled when you received it, that seems fair. If not, then return it with a similar level that it had on collection, and explain your action upon return. Plus, presumably your own car will still have that fuel in it when it is returned, so its not like you've lost it!. It is common practice for a loan car or hire car to be returned with the same fuel level as when you received it, so just do as leaseman says.    Motoring discussion badbusdriver Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198174 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198174&v=t&m=1487064 VW POLO 2023 - Is it right that I pay? (leaseman) hjforum1487061 Fri, 17 May 2024 04:52:16 +0000 It is unfortunate that you re-fuelled just before the incident, but fuel used in a courtesy car for your own benefit is your responsibility. When your own car is returned to you, it should still have the fuel in it, so there is no material loss to you. So I doubt that there is any case for you to demand recompense. Just make sure you only re-fuel the courtesy car on a piece-meal basis and return it with minimal amount left in the tank. (Jayne Nelly) hjforum1487060 Fri, 17 May 2024 04:39:11 +0000 Hi, im looking for some advice. My VW Polo 23 plate sprung a leak in the radiator a few days ago, quite substantially. I phoned VW to see how soon I could take it in to be repaired and was told the earliest appointment they had was on the 17th June however if I used the VW assistant programme, I could get it in sooner which I did and it was taken in that day. Fast forward 4 days and they tell me it was due to a manufacturing error because a bung wasn’t tightened enough on the radiator before it was released, my issue is - I’d not long filled my own car up with fuel however having had a curtesy car for 4 days, is it right that I should have to cover the cost of refuelling it if my own car had an issue through no fault of my own? I could understand if I was the one to cause the issue however it’s only 7 months old (thankfully under warranty) and while I’m extremely grateful that I could be provided with a replacement, it’s also left me out of pocket for the fact I’ve had to now refuel a second car. Is this something I should ask about or do I just leave it and refuel the curtesy car? The slightly awkward styling meant it was never a big seller in the UK and demand for them used is weak so prices are low. This is good when you’re buying but remember that it’ll be next to worthless when you come to sell so it would be wise to keep it longterm. I’d cast your net a bit wider, include other options such as a petrol Mazda 2, petrol Ford Fiesta 1.25 (not the Ecoboost!) Toyota Yaris 1.33 petrol and Honda Jazz. All are robust, cheap to run and easy to sell on again. That’s not to say don’t buy the Suzuki if you find a nice one, it’s deserving of being on the list too. The Dacia is a rebadged Renault Clio built to a price. Trim quality is lower, longterm durability is questionable also. They’re not bad cars, they just get a bit tatty with age and mileage, more so than more mainstream brands and the 1.0 turbo petrols are still untested, they’re too young to know if they’re robust. The older models were best with the slow but simple 1.2 petrol. But I’d rather have an older Mazda 2, Fiesta or Yaris. Seems to be quite roomy compared to other superminis and decent amount of features. I would like to keep the car for a few years, the extra space whilst still being a small class of car is appealing as I'm a young driver and would like to keep the insurance premiums down. I suppose my question is, has anyone had any experience with the Baleno, namely negative ones? Or perhaps should I be looking elsewhere, such as the Dacia Sandero? My budget is £7,000. Thanks for your help. Amazing price and generally great reviews.  Having the extra length would be handy for ferrying stuff about, and also for the occasional short holiday sleeping in the back, with the rear seats left at home.  The roof bars look handy too.     What do you guys think of the Jogger compared to the Duster, with my remit in mind?  And more specifically, how does the tyre size compare to the Duster's, now that I'm starting to appreciate the importance of that?     Many thanks Motoring discussion peanutstew Motoring discussion http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198144 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198144&v=t&m=1487052 Quarter million pound Impreza? (Dorset123) hjforum1487047 Thu, 16 May 2024 20:57:03 +0000 The problems with wet belts and timing chains is that a lot of people stretch servicing intervals and the acid in the oils eat into them so if you are buying a second hand car make sure it has had the servicing and oil changes at the correct mileage. I was a foreman in a large Nissan dealer before I retired and saw Timing chain problems on vehicles that had missed services but ones that had services at the right time where fine, if the car has 2 year servicing get the engine oil changed at a year Technical matters Dorset123 Technical matters http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198137 http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=198137&v=t&m=1487047 Advice on replacing my car in UK - sellers market?
